The math that actually matters: price per candle

When buying in bulk, ignore the sticker price and calculate the true cost per candle — divide the pack price by the number of candles. A 24-pack that costs slightly more than two 12-packs is usually the better deal, but not always. Also factor in burn time: an 8-hour tea light that costs 20 percent more than a 4-hour one is actually the cheaper option per hour of light.

Compare across pack sizes and note the price-per-candle trend. If the price per candle stops dropping meaningfully at a certain case size, that's your sweet spot — buying more only ties up cash and storage space.

Always test a sample pack first

The most expensive bulk purchase is the one that burns badly. Before ordering hundreds of candles, buy a single small pack and test: how long do they actually burn, do they smoke or tunnel, do floating candles sit level in water, do tapers drip? Manufacturers' burn times are estimates, and quality varies a lot at the budget end.

Test under the conditions you'll actually use — the same holders, the same room, the same runtime. One evening of testing can save you from a case of candles that don't last through a dinner service or a wedding reception.

Storing bulk candles so they stay usable

Candles are durable but not indestructible. Store them upright, in a cool, dark place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight — heat warps pillars, and sunlight fades colored wax. Keep scented candles in sealed containers so fragrances don't cross-contaminate unscented stock, and separate colors so dyes don't transfer.

Rotate your stock like any inventory: use the oldest candles first, and keep a simple count so you know when to reorder. Well-stored candles last for years, which is what makes buying in volume worth it.
