Candles are the easiest decor upgrade there is โ cheap, changeable, and instantly atmospheric. This hub covers styling candles room by room, matching them to your decor style, and using color to pull a space together.
Styling candles like a decorator
Decorators treat candles as part of a room's composition, not an afterthought. Group candles in odd numbers at varying heights, anchor them with a tray or plate, and place them where they'll be seen โ mantels, shelves, and tables. Match finishes across a room so the candle setup feels intentional.
The goal is a candle arrangement that looks good even when unlit. If a display only works when the candles are burning, it's not quite styled yet.
Using candle color to tie a room together
Candles are a low-commitment way to introduce or echo color. Pick one or two accent colors already present in the room โ a cushion, a rug, a piece of art โ and choose candles in those tones. This pulls the palette together without buying anything big.
For a calm, cohesive look, stay within a tight palette (ivory, beige, and one accent). For seasonal refreshes, swap the accent color โ amber in fall, red in winter, pastel in spring.
Getting the scale right
Candle scale should match the surface and the room. A single small votive disappears on a large mantel, while an oversized pillar can overwhelm a side table. Use bigger, taller candles on big surfaces and small clusters on small ones.
For a mantel, mix a tall pillar with medium and low pieces. For a shelf, keep it to one or two small candles per shelf. If in doubt, fewer and larger reads better than many and tiny.
