Planning candles for an event

Event candles need to do three jobs: set the mood, survive the event's full runtime, and comply with the venue's rules. Start by confirming whether the venue allows open flames — many require flameless or candles inside glass. Then match burn time to the event length, adding an hour of buffer.

Choose a consistent candle style across tables for a cohesive look, and keep spares on hand. For food-focused events, stick with unscented candles so fragrance never competes with the meal.

How many candles to order

Estimate by surface, not by guess: two to three candles per guest table, plus accents for entry, bar, and any staging areas. For a 50-person event at eight tables, that's roughly 20 table candles plus 10–20 accent candles. Round up and add about 10 percent for breakage and last-minute additions.

Bulk packs keep per-candle costs low, and unscented white or ivory candles are reusable across future events. Ordering a little extra is almost always cheaper than running out mid-event.

Flameless for parties

For events with children, crowded rooms, or venue restrictions, flameless candles are the dependable choice. Modern LED candles flicker realistically and can be set on timers, so they turn themselves on for the event and off afterward.

Flameless also removes the fire-safety worry from busy serving areas and dance floors. Many planners mix both: real candles on high, supervised surfaces and flameless everywhere else.
