๐ฝ๏ธ Taper Candles
Taper candles are the slender, elegant candles of formal dinners, candelabras, and holiday tables. Because they sit in fitted holders, size and driplessness matter more than anything else. This hub covers taper sizes, holder matching, and styling.
Taper candle basics
Tapers are tall, slender candles with a narrow base designed to fit a candlestick or candelabra socket. Their height makes them the most formal candle style, but it also makes them the most sensitive to fit โ a taper that's too narrow tips, and one that's too wide won't seat.
Most tapers come in standard diameters that fit common holders, but socket sizes vary, especially on antique or imported candlesticks. When in doubt, measure the socket's inner diameter and compare it to the taper's listed base width.
Taper sizes and holder heights
Tapers are sold by length: 6, 8, 10, 12, and 15 inches are the common sizes, with 10 inches the most widely used. The right height depends on your holders โ a tall candle in a short holder looks top-heavy, while a short candle in a tall holder disappears.
A useful rule: the visible taper should be roughly two to three times the height of the candlestick below it. For candelabras, standard 10-inch tapers are usually the safe default; for low holders, 6- to 8-inch tapers balance better.
Dripless tapers: worth it?
Dripless tapers are engineered to burn with minimal wax runs, which matters when you're protecting a linen tablecloth or a wooden mantel. They cost a little more but save cleanup and staining โ almost always worth it for formal settings.
'Dripless' is a claim, not a guarantee: drafts, long wicks, and tilted holders still cause drips. Keep tapers vertical, trim wicks, and place them away from fans and open windows. A drip catcher or bobeche adds a second layer of protection.
